Historical Publications

The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research holds an extensive archive of early dendrochronological literature — foundational papers, reports, and theses that shaped the field but that can be difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. Many were published in journals no longer in print, issued as internal reports, or written decades before digital archiving existed.

To keep this work accessible, we make these documents available here in digital form. The collection is especially rich in the writings of A.E. Douglass, the astronomer who founded the Laboratory and first recognized that the annual rings of trees record a history of climate. His early papers trace the birth of dendrochronology, alongside his astronomical work.

We hope this archive is a useful resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the history of tree-ring science.
